UPDATE September 18, 2013
Kai Adana has been found safe. Thousands of people shared Kai’s story. Sharing saves lives. Please remove posters, etc.
August 23, 2013
This original article has been updated with better information from September 5 conversations with Sergeant Joseph Iacono of the Vallejo Police Department’s Detective Division. MPN held back on some of this information so as to not interfere with what turns out to have been a very active investigation.
In particular, Vallejo Law Enforcement worked well with local FBI resources and we clarified that the family of the person of interest is prominent in the community and not in Vallejo government. MPN apologizes for that incorrect information.
Congratulations to all who helped get Kai Adana home.
(MPN) Vallejo California
Thirteen year-old Kai Adana disappeared on Sunday April 21, 2013 two days before he was to testify as a witness in a criminal case.
The back story is troubling. It suggests harboring a juvenile, kidnapping, and witness tampering. Probably a lot more.
MPN has written this summary of the facts as known for now.
This is a greatly condensed report. The person of interest is the offspring of a well connected political figure in Vallejo city government. Correction: this should say a prominent figure in the Vallejo business community. Does this contribute to what appears to be a lackluster investigation? Correction: Vallejo law enforcement has collaborated across the Bay area and engaged the local FBI Field office to assist in finding Kai. This has included the rapid issuance of Administrative Subpoenas (analogous to search warrants) to aggressively search places and persons of interest.
MPN will expand and update as details are confirmed.
The Story So Far
MPN interviewed Denise Savastano, Private Investigator and principal at LP Solutions Private Investigations. She is providing pro-bono support to this case, in collaboration with CFSI.
Kai went missing in February 2013 with a much older man. When he came home, his blonde hair had been dyed black. Part of this time was on Mare Island, just to the southwest of Vallejo. There were thefts of computer equipment during that week.
He was subpoenaed to testify to a theft that happened when he was in the company of the older man. A trial about the theft was scheduled for April. Kai disappeared two days before the scheduled testimony in April.
The person of interest charged with the theft is 24 years old.
Kai is 13.
This person has been seen in the company of Kai on and off over the last four months first in the Oakland California area and recently in Vallejo.
FBI resources have been contacted by the family. Local law enforcement has declined their involvement. The FBI will not engage without the request of local law enforcement… yet the investigation seems stalled. Correction: Local FBI resources worked in collaboration with Vallejo Law Enforcement.
This help was declined even as the Mayor told Kai’s mother “there was nothing he could do”. MPN notes that the Mayor could encourage local law enforcement to engage the FBI. Correction: the quote from the Mayor stands.
Kai Adana, age 13, is 5’8” tall, weighs 155 pounds, with light green eyes and dyed sandy blonde hair. Hair color and length can be readily changed. Kai’s hair color has frequently changed – it was dyed black two months before his disappearance.
Note his strong triangular chin and jaw.
His dark eyebrows could be bleached or shaved as well.
Legal Consequences Potentially Significant: Harboring, Kidnapping, and Witness Tampering
